Why Eye Protection is so Important on a Sunbed

Sunbeds are often used for achieving a bronzed glow, especially in places where natural sunlight can be limited. But while most people focus on protecting their skin, eye safety is often overlooked - and that can be a serious mistake.

Your Eyes Are Extremely Sensitive to UV Light

Sunbeds emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the same type of radiation produced by the sun - but often at much higher, concentrated levels. Your eyes are particularly vulnerable to UV damage because they lack the same protective layers your skin has.

Even a short session without proper eye protection can expose your eyes to harmful rays.

Immediate Damage Can Occur

One of the most common short-term effects is photokeratitis, sometimes described as a “sunburn of the eye.” Symptoms can include:

  • Pain or a gritty feeling in the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Redness and watering
  • Temporary vision problems

It’s not just uncomfortable - it can be quite painful and disruptive.

Long-Term Risks Are Even More Serious

Repeated exposure to UV radiation from sunbeds without protection can lead to lasting eye conditions, including:

  • Cataracts (clouding of the eye lens)
  • Macular degeneration (damage to central vision)
  • Increased risk of eye cancers

These conditions can develop gradually and may not be immediately noticeable until damage has already been done.

Closing Your Eyes Isn’t Enough

A common misconception is that simply closing your eyes during a sunbed session provides enough protection. It doesn’t.

Eyelids are very thin and can’t block UV radiation effectively. Harmful rays can still penetrate through and reach sensitive structures inside the eye.

Proper Goggles Make All the Difference

Using certified UV-protective goggles designed specifically for sunbeds is essential. These are made to block nearly all UV radiation and fit securely to prevent exposure from different angles.

They might not be the most glamorous accessory, but they’re far more important than preserving your tan lines.

It’s About Long-Term Health, Not Just Appearance

While tanning is often about aesthetics, your vision is something you rely on every day. Protecting your eyes during a short sunbed session can prevent problems that last a lifetime.
